Style Your Stack Design: Nancy Jainchill
Nancy writes The Armchair Journalist. She's got very diverse interests. You'll see!
Kudos from Nancy Jainchill:
“When I decided that it was time for me to have my own Substack page, I knew I'd need help. Fortunately, I knew Nan Tepper could make it happen. She'd already designed and manages my website, so I knew how skilled she was with the visual elements that are key, including the wordmark, welcome page, and logo image-specifics to Substack. Not only great with the technical aspects, Nan teaches you enough to do it for yourself. This week I scheduled my own post, a big deal! I couldn't have done any of this without Nan.”
Nancy Jainchill. What can I say about Nancy? I’ve known her for about 13 years. We met when I was a bookseller at The Golden Notebook, an indie bookstore in Woodstock, NY. The owner of the shop introduced us and told me that from that point on I would be Nancy’s go-to for special orders…because Nancy ordered and read A LOT OF BOOKS! So, that’s how it began. And over time, she’s become a dear friend, and an inspiration to me in many ways. Nancy loves to learn, and has, over the years, earned several advanced degrees, returning to school at the age of 65 to pursue an MFA in creative writing at Bennington College, VT.
We spent time getting to know one another, and would enjoy dinner out and yoga, and talking about the tough stuff. We even went to Thailand together to celebrate her 70th birthday. It was my first trip out of the United States. I went because she wanted to volunteer at an elephant sanctuary, and I love elephants. She announced one day that she was planning on going, and before I knew what was happening, the words “Can I go, too?” popped out of my mouth, surprising both of us, because I hate to travel! Well, the short version is, we went, I got some kind of gut thing in Bangkok, got better, traveled to the sanctuary, met and cared for elephants (a most amazing thing!) and sweated––A LOT––and got filthy. It was a great trip, one that I’ll always treasure. Oh, and we also each adopted puppies that were being sheltered at the sanctuary, and flew them home to the States.
Nancy approached me one day and asked me to design a website for her. It was in the early days of my design career, and her support meant so much to me. We created a writer’s site for her, and it’s been thrilling to witness her publication list growing, and her desire to share herself in new ways develop. Her interests are certainly diverse. Senior porn? Ancestry? Women’s agency over their own bodies? Check, check, check, and plenty more where that came from. She’s smart, she’s sexy, she’s sassy, she’s putting herself out there on Substack, and having a blast. Love this marvelous woman so much!
The Work
If you’re interested in checking out Nancy Jainchill’s newsletter, The Armchair Journalist, pull up your favorite chair and get cozy with her great writing. Although much of Nancy’s writing has been about sex, feminism, gender identity, and pornography, she's got a lot more on her mind that she's begun putting into words. Take a read. She’s had a very interesting life.
Or if you prefer, you can look at some samples below.
We started with an idea for the name, The Jainchill Report. But it didn’t ring all the way true for her, since all of the weirdness we’ve all been witnessing in the media, she thought maybe she wasn’t interested in being the type of journalist she’d originally envisioned. She needed to pause, and get cozy, too. The inspiration to shift her focus was strong, and she came up with the new name. We course-corrected a bit to create The Armchair Journalist. It gives her more leeway to do just what she wants. To mix it up, to play!
Here are a couple of wordmarks I created for The Jainchill Report:
Take some time, look around, and if you’re asking “What’s my next step?” maybe the thing to do is make an appointment to talk with me about styling your stack, or just go for it, and sign up for Style My Stack, and I’ll get you started!
Looks fabulous!
Beautiful work. Congratulations, Nan and Nancy.
