Love your GIF Game, gal! Your new look is great! Also, I prefer Skippy too.

But how do you pronounce GIF, Chrif?

Chris Stanton's avatar

I have the same problem you do. Always said it like gift, until I saw that the inventor said it should be like jif. I've tried to course-correct, but it still sounds wrong to me.

Your GIFs are so wonderfully joyous and playful, Nan! I pronounce the acronym JIF, like the peanut butter, even though I am strictly a fresh-ground-peanut-butter girl, not a from-the-jar type. Fresh-ground, warm from the machine, peanut butter is ambrosial, naturally sweet.... Yum! I always add salt and then have to lick the spoon I stir it with. (Now I've made myself hungry!)

On GIFs: They can trigger serious health effects, including seizures and migraines. For me, they just trigger headaches, with is easy to deal with--I just look away and quit reading if I can, or move to another web page. I know that most people love GIFs, and they are attention-getting. But you might want to consider that a significant portion of us are triggered by them. Some GIFs allow the reader to click on them and stop the motion, which is really helpful. Here's a blog post with more info from someone who did her research: https://scissortailcs.com/the-trouble-with-gifs/

xo from me!

Wow! Thanks for telling me about your peanut butter choices. I love talking about that. I’m creamy. Which are you? Creamy or chunky.

I will read the article, thank you for that. I find certain gifs awful, and visually grating. I’ll probably go back and build these so they loop a couple of times and then stop.

I have epilepsy and don’t find the ones I make triggering at all, so that’s a good thing, but very grateful that you thought to share this. I’d hate to harm anyone. I’ll figure out a way to deal with this that either adds a warning or build ones that aren’t frenetic. Those are the ones that bother me. xo

Creamy, but I like a bit of texture in my PB, which is what you get fresh from the grinder. Not enough to be chunky--that's way too much texture!--but just enough to give a bit of bite.

I agree, it's the frenetic GIFs that get to me. I think having yours loop a couple of times and then stop is an excellent solution. Because they really are fun!

I didn't know you had epilepsy, and I am glad you know how to take care of yourself. You are truly amazing! xo

Oh, yes. Epilepsy since I'm 8 years old. I'm lucky, it's not as intense as some cases. But I take meds every day, and will keep doing it. Better safe than sorry. My last seizure was about 10 years ago. Lucky Nan.

Oh, I love that story! For the details: the high-top sneakers, the mod wallpaper (so you!), the sardines, the seizure and the kids' fear and meanness. I wish that the kids had understood better--the teacher had talked to them about it, maybe?--but I am glad you had Harriet the Spy to read and re-read and help you become your courageous, joyous, creative self! Blessings on that fictional but real Harriet, and blessings on you, Nan. xo

Thanks, lovey. And yes, I realized much later in my life how scared those kids must have been, and my guess is that no one did any education or support for them. And that should have happened.

Oh, I didn't know you had epilepsy either! A good friend of mine (and former sister-in-law) has it and used to always have seizures around finals (we were English majors in college together) or when she read Faulkner. And once during a very avant-garde ballet. Glad these gifs don't trigger yours!

Always been jif to me! Love your work, Nan.

Nan Tepper's avatar

NEVER!!!! Okay. I'm good with that. I love my work, too! Thanks, Michelle. I'm feeling a little giddy long about now. SO much going on. xo

Beautiful work, Nan!

I pronounce it with a hard G

Also, I miss you! :) Hope you're keeping your head above water, my friend.

Nan Tepper's avatar

Hey, Elizabeth! I knew I liked you, Hard-G-url! I miss you too. It's been BUSY. Will you be at the slam on Saturday? I published two posts today...one here and one at TNWT!

xo

Elizabeth Beggins's avatar

I can't make this month's slam, unfortunately, because of a dinner with local friends. I'm sure it'll be awesome as always.

Have fun at dinner! xo

Thanks, Cathy. It was so much fun building them. Modern day, digital flipbooks! I hope people will jump on board and hire me to make them. xo
